This product poses a serious risk of fire because the Electric Cooling Fan control unit's metal cover may not have the specified corrosion protection. If this is the case, the metal cover will experience an accelerated corrosion process, which may lead to moisture ingress and electrical malfunction. Electrical malfunction of the cooling fan may result in high engine temperature generating a warning message in the Driver Information Module, high engine temperature shown in instrument gauge, the cooling fan continuously running or in extreme cases complete failure of the cooling fan. In the worst case scenario the condition may lead to a short circuit in the electrical fan unit and a local overheating of it. Should this occur it might initiate a fire in the engine bay. During driving the driver may in such case notice smoke and/or smell. Furthermore, the firewall between the passenger compartment and the engine bay is designed to help provide the driver with sufficient time to handle the vehicle to a safe stop and evacuate the vehicle. However, since the fan is permanently connected to battery voltage a fire may occur also on a parked vehicle, both in key-on and key-off position. Therefore, there is a risk of potential fire spreading beyond the engine bay and the vehicle itself.
